that's stuff for play and entertainment, not business/making a living. What I'm referring to is day-in and day-out reliability of the hardware and the software. If I have to spend time on computer support it's time I'm not billable or doing something productive. My clients who are on PCs seem to replace their PC laptops every 12-18 months and regularly need IT support from their companies. My Macs go 2-3 years before I pass them along to a family member for another 2-3 years of daily use.

I know Windows has improved but a few years back a very geeky engineer friend of mine (works for a defense contractor) was telling me how wonderful Windows was but was frustrated that it crashed so often. I noted that my Mac would crash maybe every six months and that I only did a restart maybe once a month; the rest of the time I just put it to sleep. He was astounded and stopped giving me grief about how Macs are toys.

OK, there are some apps that aren't written for Macs. So it goes. I don't happen to need those, others do. But my friends (and daughter) who are scientists use both and also prefer Macs and seem to manage just fine.
