You note some of them and when we had an Exploder it was certainly useful. They aren't bad at all. Used 4WD a few times and it was pretty helpful. But not absolutely essential. It held a bit more than the 9-5 wagon which replaced it, but not enough to make a difference.
The soccer mom side is pretty true, for both SUVs and minivans. I live in a town where at least a third of the cars seem to be SUVs, minivans, 4-door pickup trucks, and the like. And day-in, day-out you see a mom hauling a bunch of kids. And some admit to being soccer moms. You drive by the soccer/baseball field down the road on a Saturday morning and it looks like a used car lot for sport utes, minivans and oversized 4-door pickup trucks. Mercs, Bimmers, Yotas, Hondas, Lexus, Land Rover, they're all there. Moms at the helm. Of course these gas guzzling beasts are good at this. So people buy them. Just glad I don't need one anymore.
