There are tasks and locations where they are needed Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 06:29:37 In Reply to: Not necessarily, No Snaab, Wed, 24 Aug 2011 17:34:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am not one of those crazies advocating the ban of Sport Utility Vehicles, but daily freeway commuting for a single occupant is not a task for which a SUV is required. Too many of these vehicles are used almost exclusively for commuting.
One of my wife's friends slid into the ditch in the family car following an ice storm last winter. The next day this lady is loudly proclaiming she and her husband will be trading their car for an SUV because they never want to slid into the ditch again. My wife had to bite her tongue to not say the causes of the ditch excursion were: ice on the roads which gives no traction to SUVs either; possible (likely?) improper tires for winter driving; and too much speed for road conditions (she knows the couple).
Unfortunately (in my opinon) too many people buy these vechicles for the wrong reasons. Heavy towing, routine use on extremely poor roads or no roads, frequent driving in deep snow, large families or participating in frequent group excursions are all valid reasons to purchase a large SUV. That is what these vehicles are designed to do.
