Every government action is rooted in violence and coercion, usually in theft and corruption as well. When the federal government defied existing bankruptcy law to "save" GM, they stole the assets of the company from its rightful owners. They then used those stolen assets to set up a new company of the same name owned by the government and the unions. Those who were holding the old GM's "blue chip" stock were left with nothing but the empty shell of a company with no assets. (In a normal bankruptcy they would have gotten something, at least.) You might want to talk to one or more of those GM shareholders for a different point of view than the usual "hooray they saved GM."
In an interesting twist, owners of cars built by the old GM that have serious design defects are finding that the new GM is not responsible for them. Only specific liabilities were carried forward to the new company.
I do not believe that violence, coercion, and theft are a good approach to setting prices, nor do I believe that it is the business of the federal government or anyone else what an individual chooses to drive. (As far as I am concerned government has no legitimate role to play in determining my preferences and consider any attempt to do so as an illicit intrusion.)
Prices should be determined by supply and demand. If fuel supplies tighten, and they are sure to do so, you will get your wish and gasoline prices will go up.
