Been with Wells since '92, and my mom used them since the early '80s. I chose them primarily because of ATM access - everywhere I go, there is a Wells ATM. They aren't perfect - there's a little "big bank attitude" and they do have their fees, but IME customer service is always top notch (*always*) and coming out of the last few years I feel pretty positive that Wells was neither tied up with government assistance or strung up with damning evidence of improper conduct like BofA.
I've also maintained Golden 1 (local credit union) accounts for about 10 years, and continually think of dumping Wells and just sticking with the CU. The big reason not to have a credit union in the past has been ATM/branch access, but these days CUs are so commonplace they've banded together to form Credit Union Unions so that if you're a member of one, you can get access to your account from another. That's a nice deal. The thing that keeps me from dumping Wells, though, is those rare times I really need to talk with someone. Golden 1 is pretty big in terms of CUs, but they're not 24x7 like Wells is. Banking emergencies invariably happen at 3am on a Saturday night in a big city, not at 10am on a weekday at home. :D
But, like OKSaabs asked - what's the goal, here? If you just want a place to stash money that's a different story than if you want access to cash anywhere, or extended banking services, or other features. What those things are may influence your decisions. I have been toying with the notion of moving to an presence-less bank (like Orange) simply because I don't need much in the way of actual banking services - maybe that would work for you too.
If you're down to just BofA or Wells, I'd choose Wells. I've had dealings with BofA (and they currently have my mortgage - crap) and IMHO I put BofA at the bottom of the list, right above Chase. Terrible, Evil Empire types of institutions that could drop off the face of the Earth and I wouldn't care. My positively worst BofA experience was being fingerprinted at a branch trying to cash a $140 check drawn on a BofA account, while listening to a 75 year old man get told his Social Security check would have to be held 4-10 working days before he could draw cash against it - AFTER he confirmed he'd been a customer of BofA since the '60s. Nice work, jerks.
