Did you get an iPad or an iPad2? The 2 has a LOT more processing power than the original, which makes things like big PDFs a little graceful.
In terms of what it does though, it really is just a big iPhone. iOS is virtually the same between the two, as is most of the hardware. Expecting anything other than a "big iPhone" experience is probably foolhardy.
If you want an e-reader, Kindle or Nook is the way to go... probably Kindle. New Nooks get you access to Hulu and Netflix, which is nice, but Kindle+Prime gets you both Amazon's lackluster streaming service and their superb lending program. Content is similarly priced, between the two, and both are as good or better than iDevice content. At the end of the day, B&N and Amazon control all the content anyway - they're certainly not going to lose the price war vs. Apple on that front!
If you want speed, something Tegra based is probably the way to go, which means Android. Tegra2 is substantially faster than anything Apple has right now. The upcoming ASUS Transformer Prime (HA!) will be based on Tegra 3, and bring quad core processing as well as a discrete graphics processor with 12 cores to the table. That's the sort of speed even desktop computers of a few years ago can't match!
