This is and AUTOWEEK advertorial plain and simple. Notice the Saab Logos on it! If you put it in a print magazine you have to say "PAID ADVERTISING" at the top so people are not confused with real editorial.
You as reader are the one that should realize it is a paid ad.
BUT .....AUTOWEEK is really messing with the viewer here by not making it clear that this is an ad.
Dutch Mandel is the associate publisher/editorial director of AUTOWEEK, and he has filled that role for a long time. He is reading from a script and this stuff is very ad copy like. You can see him looking at a prompter or a card.
AUTOWEEK is a great magazine. I am a long time subscriber. Advertorials are tricky and they do mess with the editorial credibility of a magazine and website. I have spent 25 years in motorsports magazine publishing and the key is to make it very clear that this is advertising......even when the typeface looks like editorial, or the video looks like real YouTube stuff.
