OT: general rant about DIY home reno Posted by TML [Email] (#2212) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TML) on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 07:51:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Why, when doing a home reno project, must people do a bad job? It seems to be pervasive. Since I am planning on adding insulation to the attic, I took the opportunity to inspect the venting situation (don't want to have to go back up there to fix something in the near future). There are three fans in the house. The master bathroom has no fan at all (kind of annoying, but it does have a functioning window, so that's to code). The main floor bathroom that has a fan that is connected to a 3" flexible vinyl duct which is inaccessible without destroying the ceiling or the floor above. This is utter stupidity, as the vinyl will eventually degrade and fall apart (it's already brittle, and has at least one puncture that I can see). Furthermore, it appears to connect to a 1.5" ABS pipe to vent to the outside (and instead of coming straight out at the level of the fan, they routed it down through the wall for a few feet so that you have to destroy the wall to get at). Who does something like this?? The basement shower fan has a similar set up, with the 3" vinyl duct behind drywall, converting to a 1.5" ABS pipe that appears to go up the wall and into the attic, where it terminates near the roof vent - it's not connected to a vent, it just ends about a foot away from the vent, so it's really just venting into the attic and I guess they figured the rest would take care of itself. Lastly, the hood vent above the stove goes up the wall, and as far as I can tell just goes into the space between the ceiling and the roof of the adjacent sunroom - there is a conduit running up the exterior wall of the kitchen inside the sunroom to the ceiling, but there is no vent anywhere on the roof or soffit of said sunroom. Actually, for the bathroom fans I'm making an assumption based on the position of the fan and the direction the ducting heads off in when I say they appear to connect to these 1.5" ABS pipes, and the fact I cannot account for the pipes for any other purpose. However, when I turn on the fans, I can't hear or feel air coming out of ANY exterior vents. My guess is they're blocked up somehow. Before I start tearing things apart, can anyone think of another reason there'd be an ABS pipe in the attic leading to the roof vent, or one coming out of the wall adjacent the bathroom?
