I'm not a kid (hint: my first cell phone was the size of a walkie-talkie...) and until about a month ago I used a Dumbphone: it only made phone calls and handled text messages. It's "camera" was virtually useless. I never used more than 10% of whatever gigantic number of minutes I had allotted each month.
My college-aged son really did need something better than his matching 6-year old Dumbphone, both for his studies and his work.
Believe me, I'm not a big fan of Apple: I don't own any Apple computers, don't listen to MP3 files, etc. But the iPhone, I think, has a much easier to use interface than the Android phones, and with the incentives to re-up with Sprint, doesn't cost anymore, either. So I bought an iPhone4 and my son got a 4S.
I really enjoy this phone. I can check my business email accounts from anywhere, the camera is good enough for serious Web-resolution use, and there are a million other things: GPS, Google, editing websites, mileage log, weather, document scanner, radio from all over the planet, dictation, etc etc etc. I'm not a gadget person, but I find the iPhone endlessly useful.
With 2 phones on the unlimited data plan, it's not the cheapest thing in the world, but I get a 10% discount every month from my AAA membership of all things, and I find it to be a reasonable expense. Dumped our second landline, too.
Just my .02....
