Surely these circles can intersect somewhere, with a little bit of research and creativity. I found it necessary to upgrade my family (four) to smartphones with the kids in college and the fact that my employer gave me one first so I saw the usefulness and fun factor firsthand. I went with Sprint which is the least expensive of the four providers for virtually unlimited everything. I pay more than I would had I gone with what I am suggesting next for you to consider, but I am overall happy with my Sprint decision.
Suggestion:
- Start reading the cell phone forums: androidcentral, howardforums, etc.
- Check coverage in your area for the alternate providers like Virgin, Boost, MetroPCS, Cricket, etc. They typically ride on the Sprint and Verizon networks.
- Supposedly, Boost has an unlimited everything plan for $50 per month with a $5 per month on-time payment discount at each six month anniversary, until 18 months. So, ultimately you and your wife could have unlimited everything (voice, text, data) for $70. How much are you paying now to Big Red? When I left them, I was at $110 for the family and that was only for a measly shared 700 minutes (which we always exceeded) and unlimited texting on low-tech, small-screened flip phones. Thievery!
- Buy a used smartphone outright, which isn't bad considering you won't be married to the provider for two years either. Look on craggs list for phones that have been flashed to Boost, Cricket, etc.
- The Samsung phones with Super AMOLED displays are very easy on the eyes and I find their interface is well presented and simple to use. I also have HTC phones which have a nice build quality.
- In the end, you can have a nice phone that does a lot of stuff. Talking, texting, camera features, gobs of storage, photo display, music player, etc.
- I don't think you will despise being connected all the time. Just because you are connected doesn't mean you have to act like an always connected nerd - turn off the notifications if you want. The apps available on these phones are a ton of fun and very useful. Web browsing is only a little more than a joke but can come in handy once you learn how to pan and scroll.
Good luck.
