It depends on the player. Most will support both an ethernet connection (direct into your cable modem/DSL/router) or via WiFi. My recommendation is to use a wired connection as it is a lot more stable with the internet connection. I did what also was posted here. I used a Powerline connection box that uses the power lines to transfer the cable modem's much faster speed (the master box) from the back bedroom into the living room (the slave box, plugged in directly to an outlet and ethernet connected to the Blu-Ray. You don't need a computer on. You just need to make sure your internet connection is always on.
Most of the newer Blu-Ray players are designed to update their software every few months, to provide new features. My Sony Blu-Ray has Netflix, Pandora, Vudu, Hulu+ and Amazon as just some of the streaming video options. I'm sure more will become available as the firmwire gets updated over time.
It's only a matter of time before virtually all movies will be streaming, and even the Blu-Ray will become a thing of the past. Vudu is Walmart's streaming service, and has over 15K HD titles available today. I've been impressed with the quality and the selection...and there's no need to have shelves of $20 Blu-Rays that I watch once.
Good luck!
Paul H.
