A small portable box like yours won’t necessarily stop someone from stealing its contents, as pointed out they’ll just steal the box… unless they don’t want to be seen carrying something that can’t fit into pockets. A big bolted down one will stop a basic cat burglar, especially if they are in a hurry… but if someone has time, if they find it, it will make a tempting target… you gotta have something worth protecting if you have that.
The best defense, is one they don’t even know is there. It’s a small box, find someplace good to hide it… i.e. not desk or sock drawer. My mom use to hide jewelry in a stuffed animal, that had a hidden pocket, in a box with a bunch of other stuffed animals in my sister’s closet. Their house has gotten broken into a few times (neighborhood juvenile delinquents & one homeless guy) & they never even touched anything in my sister’s room... they now have a security system.
