Automobile exhaust gas is not a humane method to kill anything. In the old days, exhaust gas at least had some carbon monoxide in it, along with a lot of other noxious stuff. These days, there isn't much CO left, but exhaust still contains numerous irritants. The most humane way to kill a mouse (or any animal, for that matter) is to render it unconscious as quickly as possible. For a mouse, unless you have access to pure carbon dioxide, that would be a blow to the head or breaking the neck. Pretty much what snap traps are designed to do. I agree that glue traps are less than desirable, because while they do a good job of holding the animal, it's still alive and fully conscious while it's struggling to escape.
