because they are designed to remove dirt and strip away grease. I'd think that's what removed your water "repellentness".
Possibly the company customer service phone/email would get you a concreat answer on that for future reference on their or other manufacture's covers.
You could also go with one of the Tyvek(r) (FedEx(r) envelope material) ones, but that material doesn't "breathe", so it's not as good for outside if you're in a humid enviroment and/or you don't remove the cover and let the condensation dry off.
Either way, sorry to hear of your displeasure with the cover, although as I said I'm betting on the type of detergent being the culprit.
