I'm old enough to remember when we would only get some fruits and veggies when they were "in season." Otherwise they were much too expensive or simply not available.
We have become accustomed to buying whatever we want, whenever we want, regardless of where it is made or grown. When we get strawberries in February here in New England we are essentially getting take-out from California or someplace overseas. Is this good? I guess it is, and it's certainly nice.
But there's a real question about how sustainable this model is, given global demand for gasoline and diesel fuel. Trucks can be modified to run on biodiesel, but even infrastructure aside, it'll just take a long time for biodiesel to make a real difference in the huge fleet of trucks in the U.S.
And for cars, EVs and hybrids will probably require too many compromises for at least a couple more generations of designs and models. And if fuel mileage is the goal, they are very hard to cost justify compared to conventional vehicles that get high fuel mileage.
The internal combustion engine is going to be around for a long time. And they'll get really interesting, too, but a lot less DIY friendly as engine management systems become even more complicated.
