Here in NH there is no helmet law, just as this is the only state that doesn't have a seat belt law. The accident articles in the papers always point out whether the people injured or killed in accidents were strapped into the car, or in a motorcycle accident, whether they were wearing a helmet. Belt and helmet users do fare better.
Having ridden with and without a brain bucket, I understand the appeal of going without one, but bad things happen even to skilled riders. Still, it'd be interesting to see some data on whether a helmet really does make a difference, since when a rider goes off a bike the rest of their body usually isn't very well protected. Obviously it's a good idea to protect one's head, and it can make all the difference in some accidents, but do helmets really make the difference they would seem to make? I dunno.
I don't ride anymore, but I wouldn't ride again without one, just like I don't drive without a seat belt.
