I am a cyclist and know very well that crazy, unexpected things happen all of the time. Many years ago I hit a Doberman that ran out in front of me, I went flying over my handlebars, and fortunately landed on my shoulder; that was my last ride without a helmet - this was long before helmets were popular (does anyone here remember "SkidLids"?). About ten years ago, another rider cut me off and hit my front wheel, I went flying but this time I dented my helmet, not my head. Once you are airborne, you really can't control how you are going to hit the pavement and even at relatively low cycling speeds a helmet is a good thing to have on your head.
