Why remove storms in the Spring??

All the storm windows in my parent's 1950 vintage Cape Cod home were equipped with regulators so you could open them for summr and close them in the Fall in anticipation of winter weather.

Each storm also had a numbered tack with a matching number tack driven into the window frame. In this way all the "identical" wooden storm windows woudl always be reinstalled in the correct frame after painting and reglazing - done on 4 to 5 year intervals.
