If you're looking for energy savings, one of the best things you can do with old windows is insulate around the frames. Expanding foam is the easiest (don't use the highest expansion foam or you'll bow the frame) but you can cut the fiberglass mat stuff to fit as well, just don't stuff it in but let it have some loft. This really cuts down the wind penetration into the room. And while you have the trim off to insulate, you can replace those old sash cords and painting the windows are a lot easier when they are out of the frame.
