There was a recent string regarding the common passion many of us have for WWII era aircraft. This weekend is "Thunder Over Michigan" at Willow Run airport. Willow Run is about 30 miles due west of Detroit and is the airport which was constructed to fly the B-24 Liberator bombers straight from the assembly line that Henry Ford built to the European Theater. The old "Bomber Plant" still exists, all 5 million square feet of it, and two of the four Hangar Doors which opened to allow the completed planes to exit still operate.
See copied article below:
"The "Thunder Over Michigan Air Show" returns to the Yankee Air Museum Collections & Exhibits Building at Willow Run Airport on Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The theme for this year’s show is Mustang Mania and 20 P-51 Mustangs are scheduled to appear. Special events will include a demonstration by a Sea Harrier F/A2, an appearance by the only flying B-29 Super-fortress “FIFI†and World War II battle reenactments. Plane rides on vintage World War II aircraft can be purchased. $20 in advance, $30 on the day of the event. Kids 15 and under get in free. For more information or to buy tickets, contact http://www.yankeeairmuseum.org/. The YAM is at 47884 D St., Belleville. 734-483-4030"
During these air shows the jet fighters usually make their after-burner runs right over my house heading back to the airfield. This year it will be bombers and fighters with unmuffled 1500HP+ engines.
