Apparently many (most?) shuttle pilots were women Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 3 Aug 2012 03:21:06 In Reply to: Plane rides on vintage World War II aircraft.., Name Left Blank, Thu, 2 Aug 2012 23:58:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I spent 25 years working at the "Bomber Plant" when it was producing automatic transmisisons for cars, but the plant's aircraft history permeated everyone there. In fact, most of the plant executive staff when I hired in were WWII Bomber pilots or other officers.
The B-24s were produced one per hour on two parallel L-shaped assembly lines in the plant and WAC pilots ferried them across the Atlantic. Machine guns were test fired into earthern bunkers just outside the plant doors, fake bombs were dropped into Belleville lake shortly after take off to test the bomb delivery mechanisms, and the women pilots than took the planes on their "shake down" flights to the Atlantic coast and on to Europe.
