electric motors can have lots of low end torque... the torque curves for electric motors are often more linear than a turbo... so they should have been able to make that thing pull at low RPMs... it's probably just anemic... ultimately, it's just an expensive econobox... my inlaws get almost-Prius fuel economy from a Civic, which costs a whole heck of a lot less!
I actually differ in opinion with a lot of folks here (who don't like electrics). I don't see any point in a mediocre hybrid like a Prius... I do see the point in an electric drivetrain that goes like stink... or at least like a real car... to me, the Tesla is much more interesting than a Prius... though, it could stand to have a secondary fuel source to extend the range... imho, the most appealing setup would be an all electric drivetrain with a purpose-built diesel generator... what Saab was doing with the through the road hybrid was not a bad short term solution... especially if it was ttid up front...
