Rather than using an electric motor to start the engine, computers are smart enough now to be able to ignite fuel in appropriate cylinders (depending on what position the engine stops in) to get the engine spinning in the right direction. It's easy now that most cars have direct injection of fuel into each cylinder rather than into the intake manifold.
My boss has a Prius. Every once in a while when you come to a stop and the gas engine shuts off you can feel it stumbling and the car shakes a couple times. This is because the computer keeps the engine stumbling along until it stops at the correct power stroke to be restarted without an electric motor.
