As far as this discussion goes you should take the few meager scraps left on your plate, put them in a doggy bag and go home. You're really grasping at straws here.
Regardless of how good or bad they are, the Volt and Prius PHV have similar technology, and are comparable in every way including price. By price I mean the number on the window sticker, not all the other stuff you try to pile on. The Prius uses very different technology by your own admission and isn't comparable. If the discussion is "economical cars" than yes the Prius, other Hybrids, diesels and other cars are on the table. If the discussion is "plug-in hybrids" as it is here, then there's only two to discuss. Also Toyota calls the PHV version a "Prius" so I have no idea why you're splitting hairs on the distinction.
You finally admit we can compare the Volt to the Prius PHV (something you insisted we couldn't)but only the base version with less equipment because because it doesn't get the same mileage and have the same resale value? Utter nonsense and resale value has yet to be determined.
Finally you say people want good gas mileage--wrong. When it comes to plug-ins what people want in good ELECTRIC mileage and that's what the Volt does well and better than the Toyota. Depending on your commute, you could conceivably go for months and not use ANY gas. In fact, theoretically you could never use any gas and just use the engine for backup. That has to be factored into the 37 MPG (and is less than intellectually honest on your part). Yes if you do a lot of long trips than the Prius PHV or regular Prius (for less money) would be the way to go. And in fact that's exactly how Volt owners tend too use them--I beleive they have a web site where they compete to see who can do the most driving in electric mode.
