I'd rather spend 45 minutes commuting on a train or walking or biking than 30 minutes commuting by car, especially if there's not traffic. I like driving, but for some reason commuting by car is pretty unpleasant to me, especially in any traffic. When I commuted I had my 9k but most of the time had a back up, either another older car or a bus route I could use. Nothing wrong with piling the mils on a Saab, that's one thing they're very good at (I'm at 325k on the original engine and transmission, though I feel the latter is on its last legs). Definitely think about books on tape (I find they're very relaxing, but if you have a lot of stop and go you lose focus on them) or think about satellite radio - you get a LOT of good content, whereas rush hour terrestrial radio is pretty much someone yelling or ads. Living in the city now I'm really glad I have no commute, but the downsides of apartment living can be annoying too.
