Hybrid battery life

As I've been evaluating this Escape Hybrid for my employer, one of my concerns was the batteries. With 170,000 miles on the original batteries you'd think they'd be on their last legs. So I called a Ford dealer. According to the service department they have very little trouble with them and they pretty much last the life of the car. Our car got a lot of miles fast so I'm sure time will also have an effect. And if they do ever conk out, you can just drive the car in gas mode. I'm sure it would be on it's last legs by then anyway. The prospect of a big bill for new batteries at some point was always a concern of mine when it came to hybrids, but it may not be an issue. I'm still not quite ready to buy one unless gas gets a lot more expensive, but I would be more inclined to consider one after this experience.
