Batteries are energy storage units. The amount of energy that can move a car for more than a few dozen miles is more than enough to create a massive explosion if released quickly all at once. That's why all vehicular traction batteries are located in secure locations (for most cars, it's the gas tank, gasoline being the "battery" chemical)
In an accident like the one that I just had, where someone else' bumper pushed deep into my driver's door, essentially pushing the exterior skin all the way to almost touching the interior skin within a fraction of a second, if the mostly hollow door had been filled in with something like the typical lithium-ion battery chemical, there would have been a massive explosion just from impact and compression heat.
