Yes, you can move the "front lock carrier" into "service position", but it's not much extra work to just take the front off as shown in the photo; this opens up the front for completely unimpeded access and quicker work on the parts that count.
That said, I found a certified Audi dealer tech that does work after hours on the side. When I had him do a timing belt/water pump and thermostat job on my A6 (middle of winter, and I was not going to do it in my unheated garage), he did it without moving the front at all, just bent one coolant pipe out of the way - took him 1:45 including talking to me - best money I ever spent on car repairs! After doing hundreds of these, he knows a few tricks.
