It was probably a better balanced car than a Catalina--straight six verses big heavy V8. But that's what I'm talking about. Oddly one of the better winter cars I ever had was a '95 BMW 318IS (4 cylinder/5 speed). I could do 75/80 mph on glare ice and have perfect control. And this was before traction control. The 9000 I had at the same time was more stable, had better traction in deep snow in a driveway but was bit less intuitive to control when sliding around. The thing most people don't realize is that at speed on a slippery highway, there's really not much difference between FWD, RWD, and AWD (assuming relatively well balanced cars). In fact tires make more difference in that situation. And even cars that are very similar in terms of size/weight/tires/drive configuration can vary quite a bit in terms of how they handle snow. I also suspect sometimes that anti-lock braking may not be as effective on ice as most of us think--I'd love to find a way to test it on the same car. It's an amazingly complicated subject.
