I must be the only person left who does taxes by hand. I collect all my forms, print out the various instructions and guides from IRS.gov, and go to town. I've bought a couple mortages, dealt with stock options, having kids, getting married, consulting fees in addition to my normal income, etc. Nothing that ever left me feeling like I couldn't get a solid grasp of it. It's conceivable that I missed something but I think I've gotten it right each year.
I'd consider using TurboTax or similar, but am wary of taking it to a CPA. Same reason I work on my car, fix my own appliances, etc whenever I feel up to the task. There's a sense of satisfaction in doing something yourself.
At the very least I'd recommend doing it all yourself, or with software, and then deciding if you want to take it to a CPA. Then you'll be an informed consumer, and more importantly, get some personal insight into the madness that is our internal revenue service. It is astonishing that one of the fundamental aspects of citizenship has become so complicated that you're getting all this advice to pay someone else to do it for you.
