I used an independant guy, (not one of the chains) for years. Very impressive office with stacks and stacks and shelves of financial and tax books, nice semi-messy desk ( the sign of a genious you know :-). The prep fee kept going up each year, 70,80,100,120...and nothing really changed much with my financial or living status. He would make small talk of sports, weather & politics while he maintained a concerned and calculating look, sort of like "hmmm let me see here...hmmm what have we here...hmmmm that could have an effect on this set of numbers..hmmm" Then I finally realized he wasn't really doing any legwork or anything more than just punching in the numbers like you would on Turbotax. The whole thing took about 25 minutes, but if you take away the small talk and charades he could have done it in about 10 minutes. Made me feel like I was doing the right thing, but that was the last time I went, 6 yrs ago...now I Turbotax and pay the 60 or so bucks and I'm done. Could I possibly get a few extra dollars back here or there? Maybe, but my situation's not that complicated,a home, few mutual funds, few charities, that's about it. No rental property,no vacation property, no small business, no work complications, no alimony. no student loans..no kids etc. Now which is better? Turbotax or Kiplinger tax cut?
