why? Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Tue, 29 Jan 2013 13:39:07 In Reply to: Mixing All-Season Performance Brands, Bill Bartman, Mon, 28 Jan 2013 15:38:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
why is one pair worn more than the other? have you been rotating tires regularly? is your suspension worn/sagging and/or alignment bad (check ride height and search the 9-5 bb for more on this)?
Those are the first questions to ask.
My 9-5 came with different all seasons front and back: iirc P6 on the back, and dunlop sport somethingorothers (that many recommend) on the front. both were at 6mm. I hit some mild pooling on a highway at 55mph and lost grip on the front but not the back. This should never happen! Good thing it was not the other way around, so it was easy to regain control... The car also came with suspension issues which caused it to eat tires on the inside edge. This is very common with 9-5's, that the toe and camber goes off if the suspension gets worn. It is not hard to correct.
Now the car has Konis, is at about the right ride height, has a proper alignment, and has 4 Michelin Pilot Super Sports on it (in summer, right now it has hakkas for winter)... the car drives 100% better than before and does not eat tires anymore...
So that is what I would recommend... get the suspension sorted, buy 4 new potenza 970's, sell the 2 half decent tires used (lets say you get $100 for them + $100 rebate for buying 4 instead of 2 tires, you're probably not way over what you'd have spent for 2 anyway)... higher cost, but safest, highest performing solution... no point buying high end mishmashed tires on a worn suspension imho... that's throwing good money after bad...
