pay bills - automatic online bill pay, direct debit, etc.

send birthday cards to granny - ecards, email, etc.

The latter is somewhat facetious but the reality is electronic things (those mentioned plus evite etc) have displaced many of the traditional uses for the postal service and will continue to do so in the future. The vast majority of mail is direct marketing junk mail. The idea that we need home pickup and delivery to every residence in the country 6x per week is ridiculous. They could reduce it to 2x week, like trash pickup, and no one would feel any effect whatsoever.

I'm unfamiliar with the pension requirements on the Post Office, but given the trouble pension funds across the country are in perhaps the rule they're operating under is the right one. Dunno.
