are largely due to the fact that they are mandated to prepay (fund) their pension plan 75 years intro the future! AFAIK, there is no other entity of any kind that suffers under that kind of crazy requirement.
FedEx and UPS are already "trimming" their services. Want to send a FedEx Ground (their cheapest service) package out of Manhattan? Too bad. FedEx doesn't offer that service anymore, only the much more expensive ones. And their buddies at UPS will accomodate you, but at almost TWICE the usual FedEx Ground price!
I just got back a piece of repaired equipment from NYC. It weighed 18lbs, and cost me less than $11 to send down there, dropped off at the FedEx outlet a week ago. Had to use UPS Ground for the return trip: $18, also dropped off.
