I used an insert in an old masonry fp. They work well. The only problem is that you likely won't be able to have dedicated outside combustion air to it. There's a misconception that wood heat drys out the house. Actually, it's the dry makeup air that infiltrates the house. All the combustion air gets sucked out of the room where the fp is. If you have a "free" source of wood, it makes sense. However, if you've never heated with wood, be prepared to buy a chainsaw, log splitter, a broom and tylenol for you sore back. Even with the right tools it's hard work, dirty and time consuming.
