Wood stove pre-heater for H2O Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 20:28:54 In Reply to: Re: What about wood heat? When I lived in Silverton (9300 feet elevation) where the domestic water coming in from the street is ice cold year 'round, I put an electric H2O heater in the kitchen right next to the wood stove. Next to that I placed a 55 gallon drum filled with H2O which was heated by means of a heat exchanger loop (made from 3/4" copper) on the side of the stove. When ever a fire was burning (which was always) the water in the (open top) drum would be at least warm and sometimes steaming hot. Next I submerged a 50 foot coil of copper in the drum and interrupted the supply to the cold water heater with it so the incoming water would be pre-heated before entering the water heater. No more propane fired water heater out in the garage and the cost of running the electric water heater was pocket change. The drum full of warm water and the electric water heater also acted as thermal batteries to help heat the house.
