We built a pond a few years ago. It has an smaller upper pond, a 3 step water fall and a larger lower pond. Total of about 1500 gallons. Its a free form shape so we used a liner that works great. The walls of the pond are made of concrete blocks, hidden on the outside by a fieldstone stone wall.
We use a Savio skimmer filter with an integrated UV light, which keeps the pond very clear. a pond pump keep the water and waterfall going. Its on a timer so it can shut off at night... or not.
We do have goldfish in the pond - bought the tiny feeder fish for about a dime a piece. They are now several years old and up to 6" long. I counted 18 today. They stay outside all year without a bubbler. The pond is 2 feet deep and they amazingly manage to survive though the winters here in the Boston area.
It took a lot of work to build the pond, but as for maintenance, it is very easy to take care of. We cover it with a net in the fall which keeps most leaves out. Then a few hours in the sprint to remove debris.
I would do it again. Its the centerpiece of my wifes' garden and the kids like the fish.
