I think there is a new one coming out maybe this year? Anyway, if so, we put about 3000+ miles on one of the "OG" "new" foresters as a rental (about 4 years ago now). Two of our friends also own the same Foresters. Both were former subie owners (and basically didn't test drive anything else, though in both cases the old Subies had lasted well but had reached the point of catastrophically expensive maintenance).

Anyway we found the Forester handled very poorly because it is a tall vehicle built on a small car platform. In addition to lots of body roll, it seemed to twist on the chassis, as if there was an axis of rotation going vertically through the center of the car. It was very disconcerting. Both of my friends concur that the handling of the new Forester is atrocious, or at least the husbands do (one laments not getting an impreza)... I think in both cases, the SUV format was preferred by the wives. Fortunately at least one of them listened to my warnings and got a stick - the Subie 4 speed automatic was also atrocious... as are the sight lines... You must get used to it over time, but both my wife and I found the vehicle dynamics to be bordering on unsafe. I think the Subie safety ads are there in recognition that they are attracting a buyer who once flocked to Volvo (and Saab), more so than a reflection of a safety program along the lines of the ones at Volvo and Saab...

We had previously driven one of the older boxy foresters and it was not so bad. The new ones must be taller or something. The one thing the forester really has going for it is clearance. That combined with awd does help it in snow... but for the most part a c900 goes anywhere a forester does in winter, hauls just as much stuff, and is way more fun to drive... when we got back from our long trip (after 10 hours of driving the subie that day), I took the c900 out of the garage for a spin... it was like a breath of fresh air - and relief for my back!
