Motive brake bleeder: am I using it correctly?

I opted to refill the reservoir several times after removing the old fluid. I pumped to 15 psi and bleed some fluid in the order in the WIS.
The question is how much fluid should be bleed and how do I most effectively do that at the wheel? I used some hose going into a catch bottle. I tried various techniques of holding the bottle at different heights, keeping the other end of the hose in the fluid in the catch bottle (probably not needed to avoid bubbled with pressure), etc. Often, the flow was seemingly slow. I didn't get many bubbles, but the reservoir fluid was dark and there was some sediment or something that bleed out. Peddle feel is much better. I removed about 0.75L in total. For the 9-5, the WIS suggests bleeding 0.4L, but that doesn't include what is in the reservoir.
I assume it's better to change the fluid more often than to worry about getting it just right. I'm interested in technique as it's the first time with the bleeder. Some of those bleeder screws were on there really tight.
