I think the question is what tolerance does one need out of the wrench and what tolerance is typical off the shelf. Probably for most tasks, a +/-10% uncertainty in the tolerance is fine... Unless the typical options for torque wrenches are way off from that, they are probably more useful than ratchet and guessing the torque - kind of hard to guess within 10% without a lot of experience... at least for me...
I like the idea of a digital one... I'd never looked into that before, but I think I will... also intercomparing the ones I've got is not a bad idea, but it's true, the beam one's resolution is pretty course... there's lots of sources of uncertainty even in one of those... though at least they are probably more stable...
