Yes, Saab was significantly involved in the development of the global GM 4 cyl engine platform and it really has greatly improved their whole product line. GM benefited much more from Saab than they like to admit.
That said, 2006 9-3 Aero is not a B207 - it is the turbo 6, and it is much tighter under the hood! I can see how Wayners would be happier with an OG 9-3 from the perspective of it being easier to DIY. With a little effort, the handling of those can be improved. There are pros and cons to any of these cars.
