I've never used ATE DOT4 fluid, but thank goodness I haven't, as I might have accidentally added it to my crankcase, where I usually put my blue oil.
True confessions time: I once added fuel injector cleaner to my power steering reservoir, as I was in a great hurry before work in the morning, and the bottles were the same color (same manufacturer), and the liquid was clear for both. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it. The steering rack failed somewhat spectacularly about a week later. It developed a tendency to suddenly and violently turn the wheel right out of my hands. Had it towed in. The mechanic wouldn't believe me over the phone, but then he took it for a test drive.
