v6 was introduced 2005 for the aero... (maybe it was actually the 2006 model year that got them)... 4 cyl "Aeros" are quite sought after actually, and personally I'd rather not have to deal with the space constraints under the hood of a V6...
But yes, as of 2003, the 9-3 got a version of the GM 4 cylinder... it seemed fine to me, and appears to be very reliable... but no more iron block like in the 9-5 (but some would say that they miss mixing oil and gas also)... none of these cars have the solidity and build quality of a c900 or 9000... but they are probably more reliable (if less repairable).
the few og9-3's I drove really felt fast (and these were not viggens)... however, the downside was handling. my impression of the ng9-3 2.0L was that it was still pretty quick, but much more refined handling... for me the problem was sameness: it did drive smaller than the 9-5, but not a whole lot more so... and it was smaller on the inside, but not a whole lot more so... there was not nearly enough differentiation between models under GM. GM just wanted to homogenize everything to make Saab like Pontiac or Buick. We went for a 9-5 because I felt it would be easier to service going forward (and it seems that is mostly true - parts are available, less programming required, but probably more servicing in general is also required - a few more problem areas than the ng9-3).
I really like the exterior update of the 9-3 2008+... I wish they had done that with the 9-5. I am not a dame edna fan...
