Modern utes and cross-overs are a different world from similar vehicles of only a few years earlier. My Wrangler rides better and is quieter on the highway than my previous top-of-the-line Outback and to be honest my '98 900SE. In the mostly urban setting where I spend my time, I surprisingly get comparable gas mileage, although admittedly my driving style has changed considerably. After years of dissing utes, I have to confess that there is considerable virtue to riding high in the urban fray. The ability to see and be seen reduces my stress factor by about half, which alone is well worth any other drawbacks. I may very well reconsider my stance if at some point in the future I get back to my small town roots (and I will). But in the urban jungle, might makes right, and as long as I live in Crazy Town, I'm rolling with big, tall and you better stay the f**k out my way heavy. Something about seeing my bumper at eye level gets the attention of the kamkazi, wackjobs in their clapped out, POS Neons. I like that.
