The latter 9-5's were also 260hp, but out of a turbo 4 vs a 6. Doesn't mean it's vastly more fuel efficient, but probably somewhat (aerodynamics factor in also). I have not driven the X3 but a friend owns one and I think likes it (coming from an A4). I have however driven several other SUV/CUV's not from high end european manufacturers, and they were awful. Definitely would rather be in a "cool" sportcombi... I'm sure Porsche has got the vehicle dynamics down though. It's also probably raised less. Raised a bit is not a bad thing here in winter, as clearance is far more important than awd. The 9-3X was interesting to me. I also like the look of the X1, but there's not a lot of space behind the rear seats. X3 is taller I think than either of those, and I think the Macan is closer to them in size/height than X3 no? maybe I'm wrong...
All that said, I prefer a shape more like the panamera or Tesla S. I don't need volume as much as I need length (but not too much of that either - og9-5 is big enough). A bit of length lets me put a 2x4 or a surfboard (I'm not a longboarder) inside the car. One thing that many forget wrt SUV/CUV's is that you probably shouldn't pile them to the roof with stuff (certainly not without a cage to protect rear occupants)... so if the "trunk" area is tall but not very deep, they don't really hold that much stuff (with the seats up). Eg, the Forester we rented held about the same amount as a c900 sedan. Many things the c900 would swallow easily, the forester would not. We ended up with a 9-5 sedan because we had trouble finding a good wagon (more rare) and prioritized the driving experience vs hauling a washing machine... that's where the SUV/CUV and sport wagons shine... but most SUV's (let alone CUV's) can't haul much more anyway. to me, a big vehicle like that should be able to swallow a sheet of plywood with a washing machine on top of that and close the hatch, or it might as well be a car that's more fun to drive!
