Your argument about them paying income taxes on receiving such money would equally apply, and would be equally invalid.
The existence or not of GM does not change the total revenue of the industry. If GM died, people would have bought cars from some other manufacturers filling the void. GM was and is probably less competent at turning that revenue into profit. That means, if you believe that the entire purpose of corporate existence and human existence is to fatten your beloved government with income taxes, your beloved government-god would still be better off having the void of GM filled by someone capable of generating more profit on the same revenue, hence capable of paying more income taxes.
