Don't know where you live Tom, but here in N. Ohio we have had our share of snow too! I have a 20yr old CCR2000 which has the muscle to clear the big snows and has been totally reliable. It has a Suzuki engine and if you can find a good used one grab it.
Toro currently has a couple of 4 strokes. My neighbor has an 18inch model that runs like a sewing machine and sells for around $350 I think. It struggles with a foot of wet snow, but the powder we have been getting lately is no problem, and 95% of our snows are manageable with this machine. Much faster and easier than shoveling, and adequate for medium to large driveway.
The neighbor did have a problem with the unit. Apparently a chunk of rock salt got sucked into the carb and destroyed it over the Summer. Don't know how it got in there, and would ask around to see if that is a common problem. I know they don't have air filters, but in many years of snowblowing, I've never had that issue.
