Why auto-hold with an automatic?

I guess auto-hold makes sense for a manual, and also if you're shutting off the engine, but if neither of those, why?
My boss just got a 2008 535i automatic, and now he's looking at a bad controller for the auto-hold, to the tune of $3k. The dealer he bought the car from about 3 months ago first tried flushing the brakes, hoping that might fix it? He's had many items of concern, the thought of a 5-year old BMW scares me...
