All of your BMWS are pre-'90 and that's the difference. They were straight forward to work on, well built, and long lasting--then. Not so much now. Things have changed a lot in the last twenty years. All cars are much more complicated with a lot of things that can only be done at the dealer. You can't just get an alternator at a wrecking yard, as an example, and put it on. The car's computer has to be programmed to accept it. Cars have dozens of microprocessors that control everything and it just doesn't lend itself well to DIY. I had an '05 Subaru for a time but it was every bit as complicated as an Audi. There was always something going wrong and it was always expensive--I was spending more on it than I had been on my '98 900 with 150K on it. Just changing the spark plugs was a $400 (four hours) job at the dealer. You could probably buy BMW from the 90's, but after 2000 things get pretty tricky.
