new car for engineering student

I have been looking for a car for our son who is in 3rd year engineering. I have been wanting to find vehicle and trim level that is a good combination of fuel efficiency, practicality and lasting value. I have been looking at the Ford Focus, not the 250HP turbo, the 160HP engine. The hatchback provides a lot of cargo space, something that a student needs going to summer work and back to school etc.
Are there other higher mpg hatchbacks with good mpg's that you are aware of that you would recommend for consideration? Looking at around $20K, configurations.
I am very impressed with the engine in the focus, 12:1 compression ratio, regular fuel or E85, variable independent valve timing for intake and exhaust, direct injection. Will not get the dual clutch "automatic" transmission, too many reports of major issues, so it would be the 5spd manual. [There is a 6 spd manual, only available with the turbo charged engine.]
[And the figures we are getting for insurance for a vehicle in his name are ugly, 6 years clean driving record. That will sort of absorb all of the fuel savings when he gets rid of his pickup truck.]
